How to calculate engagement rate
An engagement rate is the share of an audience that reacts to a post. There are two versions, and they answer different questions:
| Rate | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100 | How much of the creator's audience still reacts. The number most brands quote. |
| By views | (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100 | How strongly people who actually saw the post reacted. Fairer on TikTok, where reach is not tied to followers. |
| Views per follower | average views ÷ followers × 100 | How much of the audience the creator really reaches. |
To get a number you can trust:
- Take the creator's last 10–20 posts, not their best one.
- For each post, add likes, comments and shares (and saves, if you have them).
- Use the median across those posts, so one viral video does not inflate the result.
- Divide by followers (and by views, where the platform shows them), then compare with the benchmarks below for the same platform and follower range.

What the numbers tell you
- Engagement by followers falls as accounts grow. A TikTok creator under 10K followers has a median of 3.60%; for 100K–500K it is 0.75%. Compare creators only with others of the same size.
- On TikTok, judge by views. TikTok engagement by views stays between 7.02% and 9.10% across every follower range, because the For You feed decides who sees a post. A creator well below that range is losing the people they do reach.
- Instagram reacts less per view. The median Instagram engagement by views is 2.93% for 10K–100K accounts against 7.60% on TikTok, so a "low" Instagram rate is often normal.
- Unusually high is a warning, not a win. Rates far above the middle half (the calculator flags anything three times the 75th percentile) are worth a closer look: generic comments ("nice 🔥"), engagement from accounts in countries the creator doesn't speak to, or sudden spikes point to engagement pods or bought likes.
Why engagement rates differ between tools
Tools disagree because they define the rate differently: some divide by followers, some by views or reach; some count saves and shares, some only likes and comments; some average every post, others take recent posts or the median. Before comparing two numbers, check that they were calculated the same way. This calculator states its formula and compares like with like: same formula, same platform, same follower range.
Methodology
Benchmarks come from creator accounts in Kolect's database: Creator accounts in Kolect's database (TikTok, Instagram and YouTube; refreshed September–October 2026). Engagement is likes, comments and shares per post; YouTube engagement is not reported. The engagement rate by followers is the median engagements per post divided by followers; by views, average engagements per post divided by average views. Instagram 0.30%–1.99% for 10K–100K accounts, for example, is the middle half of 14,905 accounts. Each figure is shown with its sample size in the calculator.
